I am constantly asked in our workshops and webinars how can you accurately measure cultural fit?
Â
One of the top ten mistakes in hiring occurs when a hiring executive or manager does not accurately measure cultural fit - or what we term Adaptability. A candidate may have come from a comparable company, have all the skills and experience you’ve identified on the traditional job description, and maybe they even had some major accomplishments in that comparable company.
Â
However, they come aboard your company and quickly fail. How could this happen. It happens because you didn’t probe into the details of the environment and culture of where they came from and how that compares to your environment and culture. Most hiring managers and executives attempt to guess or extrapolate whether someone might be successful based on their excitement about your environment. Of course they are excited - most candidates need a job and are trying to convince you to hire them.
Â
Probing into the details of their past environments is critical to determining cultural fit. Glossing over the details or accepting superficial and generic remarks from the candidate regarding their perception of the fit is a recipe for disaster and leads to the 56% hiring dilemma.
