Is your answer: “Our People”
We have asked this question of hundreds of CEO’s, key executives and hiring managers. Another question that goes along with that is; “How important to your career is having the very best working for you?” Most answer “”Very important.”
Given that, one would think that as a hiring manager the time you spend searching for top talent, hiring the very best, the effort to become a great interviewer would all be top priorities as a hiring manager. Well the next questions are the most revealing;
1) “As a hiring managers do enjoy going thru the hiring process?”
2) “If this is very important how much time do spend ensuring that you find top talent?”
The answers to the first one is most hiring managers hate going thru the hiring process and the second one is very little.
One reason for this is most people do what our book (You’re NOT the Person I Hired) refers to as “desperation hiring.” Meaning we become so desperate and depressed that we want anyone! The way to overcome desperation hiring is to separate recruiting from hiring. As a hiring manager you should be recruiting 365 days a year even if you only hire once a year. Having a strong que of candidates to choose from is the best way to hire top talent without becoming desperate. That is what the very best hiring managers do.
So let your actions speak louder than words. Always be looking for great people by networking, asking your employees for referrals and letting others know you are always willing to talk with top talent, because they know other top talent to refer to you when you need someone.
