Top talent accept positions for three basic reasons:
1) they want a compelling opportunity
2) they want to work for a great company with a strong vision
3) they want a boss they can respect and learn from
Companies that attract and the hire top talent know this and understand how to demonstrate this during the advertising and the hiring process. We encourage our clients to stop advertising and create a “Compelling Marketing Statement.” Most companies just post the content from their traditional job description which turns most top talent off. Top talent reads these postings and think to themselves “I already have that job” or “What is in this for me to take this job.” They don’t visualize any compelling reason to respond. As a result, they sit back and wait for something better.
Our Compelling Marketing Statements directly address these issues. Most advertising is all about the what the company wants. They put out a list of demands that read like a drill sargent barking out orders. In our book “You’re NOT the Person I Hired” we actually call this type of advertising Drill Sargent Advertising. When they are shopping around top talent don’t care what you want, they only care about themselves and how will job help me learn, impact the company and grow. If they don’t see these they move on and wait for something better.
A compelling market statement should 1) speak to the motivations of the candidate 2) share the vision of the company 3) demonstrate challenges for the candidate to grow. All these together directly address what’s in it for the candidate.
